El mundo se resume en Granada. Nepal llenó la Plaza de los Leones con versos que denuncian la pobreza, que alaban la belleza y que piden libertad.

Yuyutsu Ram Dass Sharma, poeta nepalí, presentó su libro “Poemas de los Himalayas” junto a la poeta nicaragüense Gioconda Belli.

“Los poemas de Yuyutsu evocan esos lugares cuyos nombres están llenos de grandes hazañas, de conquista de alturas y de naturaleza, cuyo lado oscuro también revela la poesía de ese hombre de las nieves”, así lo define Gioconda Belli, quien conoció a Yuyutsu en Londres, durante un “parnaso” poético.

Yuyutsu nació en Nakodar, pero su familia se traslado a Nepal cuando él era joven. Escribe en nepalí e inglés y es un incansable viajero, que enseña literatura, escritura y lee poesía en América y Europa. Ha publicado ocho selecciones de poesía, ha traducido y publicado varias antologías de poetas del Nepal.

La poesía presentada en “Poemas de los Himalayas”, es poderosa, contenida y lo mismo se alza a las alturas del lirismo que se ocupa de la depredación de los alpinistas que acuden en multitud al Everest y otras montañas, explotando animales, poniendo en peligro la vida de los sherpas.

Su poesía es una denuncia constante al peligro que representa dañar el entorno natural de los Himalayas.

Para Belli, Yuyutsu habla con sabiduria y humanidad de la vida y lo que sucede en ciudades como Amsterdam y Nueva York, de temas como las drogas, del amor y de la democracia.

Nine New York Poems - Face

Internationally renowned Himalayan poet, Yuyutsu Sharma gives a reading in the galleries from his books Milarepa’s Bones, Annapurna Poems and Nepal Trilogy and launches his new book, Nine New York Poems, A Prelude to A Blizzard in My Bones: New York.

Over the last couple of years, Yuyutsu Sharma has been working on his new book about New York City. After traveling the world, he has seen an amazing connection between the Himalayas and NYC, ‘these two highest places in the world’ and celebrates their grit and glory in his new book Nine New York Poems, A Prelude to A Blizzard in My Bones: New York Poems.

Poet and Professor from NYU, David Austell will introduce Yuyutsu’s creative world and his remarkable journeys across the continent. The gallery reading will be followed by a Q&A with the audience and a book signing in the Spiral Lobby

About the Speakers

Recipient of fellowships and grants from The Rockefeller Foundation, Ireland Literature Exchange, Trubar Foundation, Slovenia, The Institute for the Translation of Hebrew Literature and The Foundation for the Production and Translation of Dutch Literature, Yuyutsu RD Sharma is a distinguished poet and translator. He has published nine poetry collections including, Milarepa’s Bones, 33 New Poems, (Nirala, New Delhi 2012), Nepal Trilogy, Photographs and Poetry on Annapurna, Everest, Helambu & Langtang (www.Nepal-Trilogy.de, Epsilonmedia, Karlsruhe, 2010), a 900-page book with renowned German photographer, Andreas Stimm, Space Cake, Amsterdam, & Other Poems from Europe and America, (2009, Indian reprint 2013) and Annapurna Poems, 2008, Reprint, 2012).
Yuyutsu also brought out a translation of Irish poet Cathal O’ Searcaigh poetry in Nepali in a bilingual collection entitled, Kathmandu: Poems, Selected and New (2006) and a translation of Hebrew poet Ronny Someck’s poetry in Nepali in a bilingual edition, Baghdad, February 1991 & Other Poems. He has translated and edited several anthologies of contemporary Nepali poetry in English and launched a literary movement, Kathya Kayakalpa (Content Metamorphosis) in Nepali poetry.
Currently, Yuyutsu is in New York as a Visiting Poet at New York University. For half the year, he travels and reads all over the world from his works and conducts creative writing workshops at various universities in North America and Europe. When back home, he goes trekking in the Himalayas.

David B. Austell is Assistant Vice President and Director of the Office of Global Services at New York University in New York City, where he is also an Associate Professor of International Education in the NYU Steinhardt School (adjunct). David has undergraduate and graduate degrees in English Literature from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he also completed his Ph.D. in Higher Education focusing on International Education. In 1992, David was a Fulbright grantee in Japan and Korea. The love of poetry grows from deep roots, and in David’s case from his parents: his mother who sent poetry, sacred and secular, to him all through college with her letters, and his father who read Shakespeare and Coleridge to him as a child.

We are excited to invite you to the next session of the Himalayan Heritage Meet up group on Friday, February 7, from 6-8:30PM. This month, in honor of Valentine’s Day, we are inspired by the love poetry of the famous 6th Dalai Lama. Tsangyang Gyatso! We will meet in the Museum’s Serai Café at 6PM, then head to the galleries where we will explore some images and listen to poetry written by this unusual figure with our host, Tashi Chodron.

This month, we have the great opportunity to welcome two distinguished guest poets, Yuyutsu Sharma and David Austell from NYU. After our gallery experience, we will move to our Education Center where Yuyutsu Sharma will read from his book, Milarepa’s Bones, Helambu: 33 New Poems and David Austell will read from his new book. Garuda and Other Poems of Astral Plains accompanied by music and images. Afterwards we will all learn the melody to one of the 6th Dalai Lama’s renowned poems and socialize with some Valentine’s Day themed refreshments.

Announcing The Mystery over Buddha's Roots: An Analysis of the Mystery of the Shakya Kingdom

Mitsuaki Kojima is a distinguished Japanese policy essayist on global and domestic issues.

He has served as the Ambassador of Japan to Nepal and Ambassador to Luxembourg and held important posts in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs such as Deputy Director of Disarmament Division, Director of Research Division and South American Division respectively, and also Managing Director of Planning Department, Japan International Cooperation Agency.

He obtained a Master’s degree in Economics from Keio University, as well as a Master’s in political science from Yale University. Kojima was accorded The Grand-Croix de l’Ordre du Merite in Luxembourg in March, 2006. Currently, he works as President, the Japan Nepal Society and lives in Tokyo.
